Hello again everyone!

School is finally starting to draw to a close. I sent in all my stuff to Bryn Mawr, so it’s official! I received my welcome packet and everything. I met a girl when I visited BMC overnight and we decided to room together, so I’m excited that I already know who my roomie will be. That’s definitely a plus! I also signed up for the crew team while I was there, so I’m looking forward to that.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I don’t even have a full week of school left! It’s crazy to think about, but fantastic at the same time. I also have to start writing my salutatorian speech. I’m not too stoked about speaking at graduation because it’s always so HOT. Seriously, almost five people passed out last year…it was ridiculous! I’m hoping it won’t be so bad this year. And, on top of the speech, NHS members have to wear a stole…more clothing! Yuck.

But anyway, just thought I’d throw you guys an update!

April 25th

Hello again everyone!

Things have been great. Senior year is drawing to a close—I don’t even have a full week of school left! My last few weeks of school will be consumed by a senior trip to Cedar Point, a physics trip to Cedar Point, an anatomy trip to a cadaver lab, 5th grade field day, high school field day and assortments of other things! It has honestly flown by. I’m glad that I took pictures throughout the year because it seems to be a blur right now. Also, all of my closest friends and I (9 of us) each bought ourselves a scrapbook. We pass them around weekly, so that everyone does a page in one person’s book. It’ll be a great keepsake.

I officially committed to Bryn Mawr last Sunday—deposit and everything! I’m just waiting for my welcome packet to come in the mail. I can honestly say that I have no regrets in choosing BMC, and I couldn’t be happier. When I went for an overnight visit with a bunch of other people, I met great friends and had an awesome time. The campus is wonderful, the people are amazing and the location is perfect! I just hop on a train and ride into Philadelphia! No more car…yes!

April 11th

Hey again!

Ultimately, I was accepted to 5 out of the 7 colleges that I applied to, so I’m wholly satisfied with that! I didn’t get into either Yale or Princeton. However, both were a bit of a longshot so I wasn’t disappointed when I received the notification. I am, though, REALLY excited about Bryn Mawr. When I visited over the summer, I thought that the campus was absolutely amazing, that the culture was unique and they had the exact major that I wanted to pursue. So, it was kind of like fate when I received my acceptance!

I’m visiting Sunday for “Open Campus Days.” We’ll be going to meetings, etc. and then staying the night and attending classes on Monday. After that, our flight doesn’t leave until 7pm, so my aunt (who lives in NJ) and my mom and I are going into Philly for the rest of the day! I haven’t been there in so long. I’m really excited for that.

Basically, everything is drawing to a close! Senior projects are still kind of crazy, but I’m enjoying them. Senior year all seems like a huge blur to me—I’m glad I documented everything along the way!

March 28th

… and the news is:

I GOT INTO BRYN MAWR AND BARNARD! I was so WORRIED that I wouldn’t get into any of the eastern schools that I applied to. While I wouldn’t mind attending school in the Midwest, I’ve always wanted to move back east and attend college there. I am so, so, so excited about getting into both of those incredible schools. While I’m still waiting for Yale and Princeton, all of the pressure is gone because I know I will be satisfied and that I’ll have a million opportunities at either Bryn Mawr or Barnard.

It really is such an amazing feeling.

Both schools gave me a huge amount of financial aid, so I’m not worried about being in debt up to my eyeballs. That takes the pressure level down another notch! Seriously, what a great feeling! It’s nice knowing that I stood out amongst a record number of applicants because of my different activities, etc. It really makes you feel good about yourself when you know that other people appreciate your efforts.

So, it’s going to come down to the wire deciding which college to attend. Luckily it’ll be a fun decision rather than a stressful one! Like I said before, I know I can be happy at any of these places. Getting into Yale or Princeton would be like a plus.

Hello again everyone!

Senior year is slowly winding down and that means less homework, more projects. But, I love projects because I think I manage my time pretty well, so I don’t think that they’ll stress me out at all.

This week is OGT (Ohio Graduation Test) week, so all the upperclassmen and freshmen get to come in to school 2 hours late and run on a 2-hour delay bell schedule. It’s pretty fantastic. To top that all off, Ohio got hit with one a huge blizzard last Friday. We received about 4 inches of snow and were released from school an hour early. To give you an idea of the extent of the storm, what is normally a 15 minute drive home took me roughly 40 minutes. I’m glad I came home then, though, because it kept snowing through the night and by the end of Saturday, we had a good 12 inches of snow with drifts of 4 feet in places. Let’s just say that I was stuck in my house until late Sunday afternoon, so I demolished a few of the projects that I had due. That’s a nice weight off my shoulders. We also had Monday off; that coupled with the 2-hour delay bell schedule meant that I was a pretty happy camper.

I’m still applying for scholarships, though I am gradually wearing down from writing all of these essays! It’s a lot of work, but totally worth it. The more I do, the more potential I have for receiving money...and that’s better than not doing any at all, right?

I’m still anxiously waiting for college decisions. I should be able to check online for Yale and some other schools on March 24, which is over our spring break! That could decide the overall mood of my vacation! Actually, I don’t think that I’ll be particularly angry if I don’t get in, only because I know that the chances are ridiculous. I think I’m qualified, but there are numerous factors that play into admissions decisions and I understand that. Regardless of where I end up, I’m confident I’ll be satisfied because I intend to make the most of my experience.

Hello guys!

I just got back from the most amazing week of my life. I competed in an at-large program in order to become a state finalist in Ohio’s Junior Miss scholarship competition. Last Saturday, the 16th, all 18 girls from around the state assembled in Mt. Vernon and met our host families and host sisters, whom we would be living with all week. On Sunday, we got up early and attended church with everyone, had a great lunch then started to rehearse the opening number for our Friday night show. Every day, my host sister and I would wake up at 6:50 AM, shower and be at the theatre by 8:00 AM to start rehearsing various numbers. This included the seven-minute fitness routine, self-expression routine, opening number, fun finale, rose parade and award presentation. Rehearsal would end at approximately 11:35 AM. At that point, we would rush downstairs and change into a nice outfit for a luncheon. The luncheon was usually held at a cute restaurant called the Alcove and was sponsored by different clubs daily: Monday was Kiwanis, Tuesday was Rotary and Thursday was Soroptomists. On Wednesday our luncheon was held at a country club, which was a lot of fun.

All of the girls bonded and our Friday and Saturday evening shows were absolutely amazing. It was a great week full of hilarious inside jokes, eye-opening experiences and incredible individuals. I’d never take it back for the world.

So, now I have to get off my high of being away from school for a week and being treated like a princess and head back to reality! College acceptances will be coming sooner than ever and I’m stoked! Senior year is just flying by, and I’m loving every minute of it.

Ladies, if you’re reading this, please look into the Junior Miss scholarship competition in your area! I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. This past week has easily been one of the most memorable and exciting of my life. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and found that I really enjoyed it.

Hey guys!

Not much of an update here. I’m swamped getting ready for Ohio Junior Miss. It starts this Saturday (the 16th)! I’m pumped! It’s definitely going to be a new experience.

We practice all week, learning the routines, etc. while attending luncheons and living with a host family in Mt. Vernon. The two big shows that we do are on Friday and Saturday nights and the winner is crowned Saturday night.

I think it’ll be an overall great and fun experience. The girls I’ve met already are a blast…the week will fly by!

Man, I’m packing my entire wardrobe. PHEW!

January 25th

Hello again, folks!

The second semester just began and I’m definitely excited that it’s the LAST SEMESTER OF MY SENIOR YEAR! Wow, time has really, really flown. I’m nervous and pumped at the same time.

I just went to the Ohio Northern Presidential Scholarship Day, and it was really interesting. We had to do an interview, write an essay and take a test. The test was the most interesting part. It was full of random questions that dealt with the biggest assortment of things I’d ever seen! I think the test was to weed out the people who were merely “book smart” (I hate that term, but a lot of people associate that with a high ACT score), because there were a lot of current events questions. I think I did decent on the test, and the essays are always my strong point, as are interviews. Over all, I hope I did well.

I have an interview with an alum from Denison on Saturday! We’re meeting at Starbucks, so that already makes it great! We’ve been corresponding by email and she seems like a genuinely awesome person, so I’m very excited to just sit down and talk with her. I hope she’ll give me insight on college and on further studies because she graduated from the OSU School of Law and therefore knows a lot about graduate programs.

My Red Cross Executive Director called me today and informed me that I had won the Navin Narayan College Scholarship!!! It’s the biggest scholarship the National Red Cross offers, and I think I’m only one of two people who received it nationally! I’m in shock! I’m going to a board meeting tonight at the Red Cross, so I’m sure we’ll talk more about it there…but still, that’s just great!

I’ve been getting ready for my time in Mt. Vernon for the Ohio Junior Miss Scholarship Program in February. We have to have certain amounts of clothing, etc. so I’ve been thrifting a lot lately! I love my Christmas gift cards and birthday gift cards!

January 11th

Hey guys!

It’s been quite awhile! Right before winter break we sponsored this awesome senior citizen luncheon. 400 seniors came and saw our holiday concert and enjoyed a free lunch. It was ridiculously fun being a server! Then, on Friday, our winter break started. Mine was great, though out of the ordinary. My parents and I decided not to put up a Christmas tree. This is because my parents had planned a spontaneous “last trip” with me to Las Vegas. They wanted one last vacation before I headed out to college, I suppose. So, we left Columbus and arrived in Las Vegas on Christmas Eve.

The trip was beautiful because it was a cloudless night and we flew right over the mountains and saw all of the lights. The next day, Christmas, we walked around the strip—it was so strange, it didn’t feel like Christmas at all! We stayed until the 29th and then we took a red-eye back to Columbus. Even though I wasn’t even 18, it was a great time. The hotels are incredibly huge and the food is great (even if it is a bit overpriced!). It was a good bonding time, so I’m glad we did it.

Onto college stuff! I got a letter from Allegheny College that said I was accepted :) so that was grand. Also, I just recently received a letter notifying me that I was awarded a huge scholarship, so that was even better. I’m still holding out for Bryn Mawr, Princeton, Yale and Barnard, so we’ll see what’s going to happen. I won’t know until possibly April for all those, so I’m biting off my nails here. All my friends already know where they are going to go! It’s madness, but, it’s totally worth it.

I’m going to compete in Ohio’s Junior Miss Scholarship Program in February. There are about 20 other girls competing, so it should be a good time. We’re judged on interview, self-expression, fitness, academics and talent. It’s a great competition because it really plays up my strong points: public speaking, academia, piano and 12 years of soccer. At least I have a bit going for me! I’m looking forward to it because we get to spend a week with a host family and learn all the routines for the big show on February 22 & 23. I’m pumped. It’s going to be amazing.

I’ve done a few other scholarships but I’m lacking some serious time. Exams are next week and it’s going to be crazy. Of course the greatest part - I TURN 18 ON FRIDAY. I can’t wait! About 25 friends and family are going out to eat with me on Saturday the 12th, and help me bring in the big 18! I’m going to celebrate at my work on the 11th because I’ve worked there for almost four years and they’re basically like family, too.

So, that’s about it for now! School is going great: all A+s except in physics but I can deal with that A! 2007 was a magnificent year full of learning experiences and fun. 2008 is going to be a character building year for me, and the new experiences are already hitting me hard! I can’t wait.

December 7th

Whew, I have a lot to say but I hate to write a book! The holidays have been going great. I traveled to New Jersey with my mom and grandma (sadly by car) and while up there we visited Wesleyan University and Yale University in Connecticut! Guess what? Surprisingly, even to the dismay of my mom and dad (okay, they’re native Princetonites) I loved Yale! The phone conversation I had with my dad after telling him this was interesting but I think he’ll eventually get over it! Ha, ha. I hope I get in! I loved the city and my cousin actually lives nearby so I won’t be completely away from my family. Double awesome!

I got my ACT results – yay! I raised my score from a 29 to 32! Whoo! It’s really funny that my math and science scores were my lowest while English and reading were my highest…and I totally want to work in research science! It will all work out somehow! Maybe that just means I should write up everything that I find while researching…tricky.

So, I’m finally done applying! I sent out all 7 applications and I’m about to send out the supplements by mail this coming week! These fees for admission consideration are killing my bank account though… thank gosh for parents!

I just competed in the Ohio Junior Miss scholarship. I hope I get to nationals, but it’s a long-shot! It was fun anyway. I’m going to keep entering scholarships and everything, especially for the Red Cross! I’d really love to become part of the National Youth Council this coming year for the Red Cross.

November 16th

Hey everyone! I’m about to send out my final apps and then it’s all about the waiting game! I probably won’t hear back from any of the colleges until around April. That’s a little depressing, but hey, at least the stress of completing them is over.

I rushed and sent in my Intel scholarship today. A few things got caught up in the mail and I had to literally run to the post office and have it mailed overnight to Washington D.C. Yipes - there goes $16! Ah well.

I’m watching House right now…exciting! I love this show.

I’ll be getting my ACT scores online in a few days, so that’s always a bit nerve-racking. I really hope I did better than last time. I want to increase my chances of acceptance!

Just got my report card from the first nine weeks --> 4.8 GPA altogether! But, that’s not cumulative, just for that nine week period. I’m satisfied with it. Actually, I really enjoy my classes this year. It’s nice being a senior because I have all of my favorite teachers.

November 2nd

Everything is relatively fantastic here! I’m still not too unbelievably stressed. I got my SAT II scores back and they weren’t as high as I’d like, but I really hope that colleges look at a lot more than just test scores. Isn’t that what everyone is thinking, these days? After all, my motivations and ambitions can’t be summed up in a single test score.

I’ve worked a lot on my applications. So far, I’ve sent in Allegheny and Denison. I still have Wesleyan, Princeton, Bryn Mawr, Barnard and Oberlin to do. I’ll hopefully be visiting Wesleyan around Thanksgiving because my family and I are trucking to New Jersey to visit my aunt and uncle who just recently moved there from Connecticut. I’m excited to be going back east, even for a visit.

The first quarter just ended at school, and I believe that I ended up with 2 A+s and 5 As or something to that extent. I did a lot better than I thought I would in calculus; I ended up with a 95%, having a 99% most of the time. Math certainly isn’t my strong point, but I’m actually enjoying calculus and definitely physics much more than I thought I would.

Life is going as usual. Friends are getting a lot cooler because I think everyone realizes that it is our last year together and we should all just get along and have a good time. I actually painted pottery with a few of my friends the other night! I’d recommend that to anyone - what a great time!

October 19th

Hello again!

I’m retaking the ACT this coming Saturday (the 27th) and I hope I can break the 30 mark. I know that I should have last time but I messed up royally on the math part and that brought me down! LAME! Well, at least I’ve been reviewing a bit, especially because I just took the SAT subject test in Math I about 2 weeks ago.

I also received my first acceptance letter the other day!! Ohio Northern University accepted me within 2 weeks of receiving my application – gotta love rolling admissions! That at least gives me a bit of hope to get into my favorite schools because ONU is a fairly esteemed university.

School has been good – a bit hectic over all with 5 honors classes and anatomy, but not bad. I think I’m the only student with an A average in anatomy right now. I guess that just proves that I should definitely go into the medical field; that’s good, too, seeing as that is what I want to do! It’ll help a lot. I’m sad my school doesn’t have organic chemistry, but I’m sure I’ll get my fair share in college. I just would’ve liked to see a bit of it before going to college and having it sprung on me!

Just sent in my apps to Denison and Allegheny; working on Princeton, Bryn Mawr, and maybe Oberlin!

October 5th

I’m done with all my common application stuff! I actually haven’t sent in any common applications yet though because, I won’t lie, I’m a bit intimidated to hit that “submit” button at the bottom! It’s strange.

I’ve got 4 teacher recommendations and 2 separate recommendations that I plan on sending to all the colleges I apply to. Hopefully that’ll add to my application’s quality! I’m also going to send the cover page and abstract of my thesis along with all of them.

I applied to Ohio Northern last week and since they have rolling admissions, I hope to be hearing from them soon! I have a few friends who went there this past year and they absolutely love it, so I thought I would give it a try and then put some thought into it if I got accepted!

Other than that, senior year is going great! I got my interim just the other day: 4 A+’s and 2 A’s! So far so good. Just have to keep that up! I actually love physics, which was unexpected since math isn’t my strong point. I love anatomy, which I did expect, and calculus isn’t so bad either. American History is awesome because we have a great teacher and great class discussions.

I took three SAT subject tests yesterday and I hope I did well! I feel I did pretty well on Biology M (molecular) and so-so on Math Level 1 (I think I should’ve done 2 because I forgot a lot of the lower level math; strange…) and French (which was a lot different than I expected). I prepared a bit ahead of time, so that helped a lot.

Hello again, guys!

This year has been hectic already! My Red Cross Club has about 50 members, which is incredible for our fairly small school and rural atmosphere! We’re really setting the bar for other schools and it’s rewarding. And we just got t-shirts today!

As for colleges, I’ve been researching a lot and I’m fairly sure what I want to major in. I’m selecting colleges that accommodate this major and possible other ones I may switch to if I find it unsatisfactory. I’m looking into neural and behavioral sciences, probably neuroscience, either as a major or a concentration. With that said, I’ll list you my schools that I’m filling out applications for!

Barnard College
- One of the seven sisters (all girls schools) and an affiliate of Columbia University. This college has many perks, especially with a major that is precisely what I want. It lets me divide my interest between the behavioral and the biological side of neuroscience, which is precisely what I’m looking for. It also has ties with Columbia University, which I also love, so that I can enroll at both schools. I love New York City and grew up on the east coast, so this school is definitely one of my favorites.

Bryn Mawr College
- Yet another member of the seven sisters. When I got a tour around campus, I felt at home. I loved the atmosphere. Even though I’ve never been in an all-girls atmosphere, I don’t think I would have a problem adapting. It has a great location, having a tri-affiliation with Swarthmore (another one of my favorites), Haverford and the University of Pennsylvania. They have a neural and behavioral science program at Bryn Mawr that I could concentrate in.

Denison University
- This is my parents’ favorite school, obviously because it’s fairly close to home! It’s about an hour from my house. However, that is not why I’m going to apply there! I love the campus and the atmosphere and it has a great academic reputation. It also has a neuroscience major there.

Ohio State University
- This is basically my safety school. The only reason I’m applying to OSU is because of the huge array of majors it offers, so that if I do want to spontaneously switch majors, I’m able to.

Oberlin College
- A great little college in northern Ohio. I’m hopefully going to visit the campus soon and I’ll see how that changes my view of the college. They have a great science department and also have a major in neuroscience.

Princeton University
- My long-shot school. One of the main reasons I’m applying here is because I grew up there. I was born in Princeton, lived near Princeton and am very familiar with the area and accustomed to the way of life. I have always loved the school and attended many camps there when I was younger, so I feel comfortable there. They have great academics and a good science program, as well. I would love to be accepted—my parents both worked there, so it would be like going back home!

That’s my list so far; some may be added and some removed. I’ve spent a good amount of time deducing what I want to do, what I want in a college and so on and so forth. It’s been difficult and mind-boggling, with my crazy senior schedule and all my activities, but definitely worth it.

As for taking all the hard classes my school offers as a senior, it’s definitely worth it, no matter how many times I think I’m drowning in homework. It’s really not a bad load once you learn how to deal with it, and I’m glad that I’m pressuring and dedicating myself the year before I go to college so I know that I can set high goals and reach them.

I’m retaking the ACT on October 27th just to see if I can break the 30 mark. I had a terrible math score last time (I’m pretty sure I made some huge mistake somewhere and it skewed the score) so I’m retaking it. I was satisfied with my other scores last time (33 science, 32 english, 30 writing, 29 reading) so I just need to get up that stupid math grade. It’s not like I’m TERRIBLE at math, either. Grr. Dumb mistakes.

Introduction

My name is Brielle, but everyone calls me Brie. I’m 17, and I’ll be a senior at Buckeye Valley High School in Ohio—a small little school with a lot of heart. I’m very active in just about everything at our school, and a favorite past time of mine is attending the sporting events. I’m a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Co-Creator and Co-President of the Foreign Language Club, Creator and President of the Red Cross Club (my baby), and a former member of the varsity soccer team. I could not participate on the team this year, due to a knee injury that had been steadily getting worse for the past few years, but I look forward to supporting them this season.

Above, I said that the Red Cross Club was my baby—and now I’ll explain why! My Student Council advisor got an email asking if there were any students that he would feel good nominating to become a member of the Board of Directors of the Delaware County branch of the Red Cross. He came to me and I thought it would be a great idea; I’m a huge advocate for community service and volunteering. I interviewed for the position and was elected to the Board of Directors in December of 2006. Ever since then, the almost non-existent youth program of the Red Cross of Delaware County has been flourishing. I started the Red Cross Club at my school and gained 30 members within the first few days—it was amazing! We’ve accumulated some 170 hours of community service since the creation of the club (March, 2007) and look forward to this coming year! We have already got people emailing us asking for our services. It’s great to feel like you’ve really made a difference! A new position was created, Youth Coordinator, in order to facilitate our efforts to make the youth involvement grow steadily; the new Youth Coordinator and I have already made huge arrangements for this coming year. I can’t wait.

So, you probably think that I have no life other than school. No, no! I assure you, though I’m a big fan of “being the best I can be” academically, I do have a life outside of school. I love my job (how many people can say that?!). I work at a place called Recreation Unlimited, a camp for people and children with mental and physical disabilities located in the little town of Ashley, Ohio. As a camp counselor for the past three years, I have worked with countless children and adults and grown a lot as a person. I absolutely love the atmosphere, the people I work with, and the new opportunities I have the potential to create. It makes you think a lot about life, and it has personally influenced my future aspirations. I have worked with children with autism since I was 12 but only through the summer camp. When I came to Recreation Unlimited, I had the chance to continue this work year-round and broaden my horizons. Now, as a rising senior, I think I know what I want to do in life, and I have Recreation Unlimited to thank for that, in more ways than one.

I’ve always loved science, and since I had a new found love of behavior, disabilities and the like, I wanted to incorporate those two. I think that I’ll pursue neuroscience or a double major in biology and psychology in order to pursue my greatest goal: to be a research scientist focusing on how the brain affects behavior, especially concerning disabilities.

Okay, back to the school part—I forgot some! This past year, as a junior, I attended the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium School, located at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (I know, obvious). I went to my home school half a day, then to the zoo and studied zoology and statistics. There was one reason why I chose to attend this school that rose above all others: the potential to write a masters-level thesis paper throughout the year. Come November I had decided what my project would be: I would study the female dominance hierarchy of Mandrillus leucophaeus, the endangered drill, an Old-World monkey. The Columbus Zoo was one of only four zoos in the entire country that housed these primates and I considered myself very lucky to be trusted with such a great research project. The project was great, but there were definitely some trying times: I had to observe for an hour a day, but in my case, the observations always had to be done from the outside. The drills had an indoor and outdoor exhibit, both glassed in, so that I had to sit outside and look in to observe. This was great in the summer, but not so great on the zero degree days that we had this past winter. Let me tell you—I think I wore about 4 layers of clothing on one observation day. In the end, though, it was completely worth it. I knew I wanted to go into research after finishing my project. I also became an advocate for animal rights and became much more interested in the environment. It was just a great overall experience.

Alright, to the personal life! Let’s see... I’m an only child and I actually love it. I know, most people would think it would be boring but I really do enjoy it. I have a lot of time to pursue the things I want to do outside of school, like working, volunteering and the like. So, no complaints from me! I also have some wicked cool parents who support me in everything I do. I am in a relationship and have been for the past two years (as of August!). He attends Baldwin-Wallace College in Cleveland, Ohio. He’s a pretty sweet guy.

So, random information: I have 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 horses. I was not born in Ohio; I moved here when I was 11 years old (literally—about 2 days after my 11th birthday). I was born in Princeton, New Jersey and loved living there. I think that is one of the biggest reasons why I want to attend college on the east coast. I love watching movies and quoting things. I also have a very dry sense of humor and I’m a bit sarcastic. I love reading and writing (one of my biggest goals in life is to be published). Additionally, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, going on “adventures” and hiking. I’m extremely outgoing and I like trying out new restaurants. I drive a 2001 Toyota Celica. I absolutely love music and have played piano for 10 years. What else? I’ve ridden horses since I was 8, I’m a big HOUSE fan, and I have a various assortment of heroes/idols. I just recently returned from a trip abroad to France with my French class and LOVED it. The architecture, the language and the culture were just amazing. I stayed with a French family and had an absolute blast.

I really am a normal (okay, in a manner of speaking), 17 year-old girl who is PSYCHED for college. I can’t wait for more freedom, more responsibilities but mostly, I can’t wait for the chance to pursue my future with bigger steps.
